post12Welcome to the new Grain Chain blog. Over the next couple of months, we aim to bring you news, information, teaching ideas and resources in connection with the grain chain – that is, the process that begins with the wheat in our fields and ends with food products in our homes, such as bread.

We’d like your comments on our blog too – your thoughts on the issues we raise, or what you think of the information we’re providing. We want to make this blog useful to teachers who use the Grain Chain.

Summer is the season of agricultural shows, and the Grain Chain is going on the road to tell even more people about this useful educational resource. Our first stop is at the Suffolk School Farm and Country Fair on Thursday 23 April, where we will be offering bread baking and grain art activities. If you are attending the event, please come and say hello.

There are lots of other fairs coming up in the next month – here are a few that you might be interested in:

  • Food and Farming Fair, Weald and Downland Open Air Museum, Singleton, Chichester, 3 – 4 May: features local producers, cookery classes, demonstrations and children’s activities celebrating downland farming
  • Dales Festival of Food and Farming, Leyburn, North Yorks, 2 – 4 May: includes food hall, cookery demonstrations and farming for food demonstrations such as sheep shearing, Dales livestock farming and butter making
  • Newark and Nottinghamshire County Fair, Newark Showground, 9 – 10 May: features a sheep show, countryside area, vintage tractors and environmental area.
